Woodville residents could soon be sporting bulging muscles and washboard abs when a free outdoor gym is installed in the small Tararua town.
Gym equipment, including an air walker, rowing machine and strider, will be opened at Fountaine Square by Tararua Deputy Mayor Bill Keltie on October 29. The project, funded by Woodville Districts Vision and various trusts, cost about $20,000, and took more than two years to plan. Woodville District Vision secretary Carole Wilton said a survey of residents revealed a strong backing for the facility. "I thought that it would be really good here since we don't have any gym at all," she said. "They have to travel to places like Dannevirke and Pahiatua. We wanted it to be in a public area, so it could be easily seen." But there will be no Venice Beach-like benches and weights, as they could be stolen. "No, we haven't got any weights. The equipment is very strong and sturdy, and we have tried to make sure it was vandal-proof." She believed both young and old would use the facility and protect it. A Sport and Fitness Expo will be held following the opening, which will include an equipment demonstration. The opening starts at 10am.
